Ru ware was produced at an imperial kiln during the Northern Song dynasty, over a relatively brief period, and surviving examples are exceptionally rare. The dish is covered throughout in a serene sky-blue glaze, with a naturally developed network of crackle across its surface. It was fired using a spur-support technique, leaving minute firing-support marks on the base. Revered as one of the supreme achievements of Chinese celadon, Ru ware epitomises the refined simplicity and understated elegance of Song-dynasty ceramics.

The glaze displays the classic Ru ware sky-blue hue, leaning towards a pale blue-grey that is soft, restrained, and free from ostentation. Its serene tonality evokes the tranquil blue of the sky after rain. The surface reveals a naturally developed network of crackle resembling fractured ice. Along the rim, the glaze thins to expose the body, revealing the characteristic ash-grey texture known as xianghui tai (“incense-ash body”). These features accord with the defining aesthetic qualities traditionally associated with Ru ware: “blue as the sky, a surface like jade, crackle as delicate as cicada wings, and spur marks as sparse as morning stars.”

Ru ware was fired using a fully glazed, foot-enclosed spur-support technique, leaving no exposed unglazed foot ring on the base, but only a few minute, sesame-seed-like spur marks. Developed for the refined requirements of the imperial court, this firing method preserved the continuity of the glaze across the vessel to the greatest possible extent. The distinctive combination of a fully glazed base and tiny spur marks is one of the key diagnostic features of Ru ware.
